Hey, We Do Cosplays Too!

It’s a reaction to a friend overseas who once asked “Really, you got cosplays there?” It may have been years since that rather infuriating question was asked but it stills manages to get on the nerves. Of course we Pinoys got cosplays! As a matter of fact, we’ve been doing cosplays for nearly a decade now.

The local anime industry may not be as bursting as other nearby countries like China, HongKong or Singapore, but we pinoys still manage to come up with cosplays to celebrate otakuism.

It probably all started in the mid-2000 when UP Diliman’s Anime@Arki celebrated its anniversary. Though the event was not as big or as popular as the ones that followed it, this still deserves a place in pinoy cosplay history.

It was the next few months after that the official start of Pinoy Cosplay was marked. AnimeXplosion was an event held at the Megatrade Hall of the most popular mall in the country at the time. The event was said to have attracted 10,000 people. AnimeXplosion also started the trend in anime conventions in the country. For three days, fans gathered to witness the birth of anime fanaticism.

The show’s highlight was of course the cosplay event where “Anime Seamstress” Leah Guerrero and crowd favorite JM Chua dressing as Saitou were some of the people who would one day become popular cosplayers.

From then on, anime conventions were held every year, much to the delight of both cosplayers and spectators. Anime Quest, together with Questor Magazine ran a yearly convention for the next three years. And then, the birth of another local anime magazine, OtakuZine, paved the way for the yearly O-Zine Fest.

Nevertheless, a number of cosplays have sprouted each year since then. Enchanted Kingdom has one, even Animax, and many more.

Till now, anime conventions and cosplays are staples for the growing pinoy otaku population. And the culture has since encompassed other hobbies such as gaming. Also worth mentioning is the development of self-made costumes. Though perhaps not as far as how the Japanese do it, we’re sure are still on our way to great improvements – All of these in a span of a decade. And there isn’t any sign of pinoy cosplays retiring.

Some Dos and Don’ts on Cosplay

Here are some basic guidelines to a great cosplaying experience.

Do – be patient. Don’t let your temper fly out. Be prepared for the long line of people wanting to get inside the convention area and especially the ones lined up to change costumes.

Don’t – go to the event dressed already. Well, this could be debatable if you want to make a scene around the mall or even outside.

Do – learn your character. You wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself looking like one character but doing the signature pose of a completely different one.

Don’t – be pikon. If guys whistle whenever you pass by wearing your Faye Valentine get-up, well, don’t walk away cursing about how stupid people are.

Do – be ready for photo ops. Check your costume. There may be some wardrobe malfunctions. The last thing you’d want is an unflattering look caught forever on a photo.

Don’t – be rude towards other cosplayers. You just passed by ten other people wearing the same costume as you. Don’t go laughing at the ones who don’t look good in it or telling friends about how silly it is.

Do – enjoy every minute of your time together with people of similar interests.

No End to the Tale: Anime that Never Reached the Finish Line

Wouldn’t it suck to see an anime and never have to see its ending?

Unfortunately this isn’t like the fate of Rurouni Kenshin anime, because in comparison, what happened to RK could actually be better for at least it was the production that was discontinued and not just the airing.

This is about those anime that never saw its ending on local pinoy TV.

It’s completely ridiculous and to hardocore fans, unforgiving. A beloved anime getting pulled out of its airtime leaving fans hanging. What’s worse, some of these animes were so close to its conclusion. Ain’t that enough to pull your hairs out in frustration?

But sadly, back then it was a sort of disease for local pinoy channels to discontinue their airing anime. And otakus could only ask why.

Sure, these days we otakus have all the access to anime. But wouldn’t it have been more special if we saw the ending to the following short-lived anime on pinoy TV?

Battleball (Go-Q-Choji-Ikkiman)

Searching this anime on google revealed a number of sentiments from local otakus on its sudden pull out on air. Dubbed in English (as most anime back then), Battle Ball is a sports anime where the characters play a galactic game of baseball. What’s unique about this anime are the bats for players uses an assortment of “weapons” to win the match.

Wonder how the team won the entire game? Or did they?

Candy Candy

This shojo anime used to be shown in the early evening and told the story of Candy and Annie who went their separate ways after leaving the orphanage.
She set out on an adventure of self-discovery as she live with families and fall in love with the “prince on the hill”.

Wonder how Candy turned out after all of the trials she went through?

Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior)

Dragon Quest chronicles the adventures of Abel to save his friend Tiala from the demon Baramos who kidnapped her upon learning that she has the jewel to awaken the great dragon that grants eternal life.
Isn’t this anime’s drawing style somehow reminiscent of Dragonball Z? Well that’s because Akira Toriyama is involved in the creation of the game that inspired this anime.

Wonder how Abel was able to save Tiala?

Timequest (Time Travel Tondekkeman)

One of the craziest anime shown during that time would probably be Time Quest – the adventures of two best friends as they travel throughout time and space with the help of a time capsule in the form of a loud-mouth kettle. There are more weird and funny characters thrown in the bunch including a giant genie who wears a superhero costume.

Wonder how those two teens got back home?

Superboink (Tonde Buurin)

When Rini met a weird looking yellow pig named Binky, her life changed forever. She became a superhero – but a pink, round, snouty one. She came to be called Superboink. But Rini gets used to her alter ego while looking forward to the deal that after collecting 108 pearls, she’ll be able to transform into the superhero she wants to be.

Wonder what really happened when she finally collected the pearls?

Yaiba

Who could forget how the show was cancelled during the Empress of the Moon Arc. We never saw how Yaiba (may have) kicked enemy butt with his ultra cool sword. Now who could forget that sword powered by various orbs. Also, who could forget the original laughing sound of Master Musashi.

Wonder how Yaiba defeated all other enemies after the Empress of the Moon?

Crayon Shin-chan

Perhaps Shin-chan’s brashness was too much for pinoy TV that this show got pulled out? Or perhaps Andrew E’s talent to voice the main character was too much compared to his compensation? Whatever made them pull this show, we definitely want to know. The fact that the show is still airing in Japan should be enough to make us wait that someday the show’s local run will continue…

Wonder how Zou-san is doing? :)

Ranma ½ (Ranma Nibun no Ichi)

What is it with Ranma ½ for it seems to be cursed with discontinuation? This anime had its first local run on RPN 9 and after a few years was aired on GMA 7. Recently, TV 5 got the permit to air it but what at first seemed to be a smooth ride for this anime turned out to have another hump when yet again it was cancelled.

Wonder when Ranma ½ will ever be aired entirely?

And that’s it. Do you remember watching any or perhaps all of these shows back in the day? Oh come on now, don’t be too shy to admit your age.

We’ve enjoyed these anime together and certainly wouldn’t mind now if local channels show them again if only to bring a sense of nostalgia. But perhaps they could finally show it till its end?

Wonder when that will happen? Or will it ever?

Every Rose Has Its Thorn: Youko Kurama

Hair: Silver (demon-form), Red (human form)

Eyes: Hazel/Gold (demon-form), Green (human-form)

Kurama’s life started in the human world as a son of a gentle woman. He became a good son and competely abandoned his demon past for her.

Yet his life made a turn back towards his past when his mother got sick and he needed to find a better way to cure her. Since then, he became part of a group of thieves who stole the three artifacts of the ReiKai. It is also when he first met ReiKai’s newest detective.

Since then, Kurama’s life had been spent juggling between school and battle together with the Urameshi Team.

Yet, Kurama’s past is truly nothing compared to the battles he’s done with his newfound friends. In his life as a fox demon, Kurama had a reputation as the demon no one would dare encounter. He had the cunning qualities of a fox and the venom of a poisonous plant.

But Kurama has changed since then. His encounter with the humans had created a calm and gentler side to him. At some point however, this gentleness had caused him more trouble than he could imagine.

Kurama is smart and analytical, qualities that makes him deadly in the ring but sometimes poses as his weakness for he must study the opponent first before making a move. In his arsenal of weapons are his rose whip, rose petals, carnivorous demon plants and seeds that could sprout at his command.

Proud Pinoys, Net and Anime

Sure the net is vast and seems infinite. Couple that with the known truth that we Pinoys aren’t exactly behind the times when it comes to trends which includes modern technology. Add to that, the natural pinoy liking to anime.

So then why are pinoy-run anime sites such a rarity?

Quite understandably, running an anime site is not an easy task. There’s the writing and the posting with the constant updating. And, well, admittedly, we pinoys may not have that much resource to splurge in maintaining an anime site.

But come on, pinoy otakus out there! Where’s your burning passion and desire to uplift the anime industry in the country?

There had been some pinoy anime sites in the past but unfortunately they’d stopped updating and got stuck in the past. One of them is Pinoy Anime (http://www.angelfire.com/my/pinoyanime/).

However, that didn’t stop animeHOLIC from scouring the internet for some pinoy-run anime sites worthy of a click on the mouse and even a second or a third look. We found quite a few, but only a handful became clear standouts.

Here are some proudly-pinoy run anime sites for the anime-loving local:

PhilAnime.com
http://www.philanime.com/

Google “anime pinoy” and this site would be on top of the list. And it certainly isn’t surprising. PhilAnime is probably the best site for Pinoy otakus to know what’s going on in the city—animewise.

According to the site owner, Jay Sanvictores, the site started as a way for him to learn PHP and MySQL. That was around 9 years ago.

PhilAnime.com is “dedicated to all things Anime-related”. Anime news, manga, figures and events are covered and regularly updated, as well as other hobbies of the site owner.

How good is this site, you ask? Well, just take a look at the updated Phil TV Anime schedules somewhere on the site and ask no more.

Anime Kabayan
http://animekabayan.wordpress.com/

Do not be fooled by your first look at this wordpress blog for though it may look plain and perhaps even boring on the surface, dig deeper and you’ll find out what makes this site run by a Laguna local something more.

Want to be updated on what local channels have in store? Or perhaps inside information on what will be aired next? Anime Kabayan seems to be able to get the news before it hits most pinoy otakus.

Anime Kabayan is the best site for updates local TV channels’ anime programming.

According to the site owner, his writings had been published in the entertainment section of one of the leading local tabloids in the country and that he also had an exclusive story then about the confirmation of the launch of anime channel Hero TV. Hmmm…sounds like the anime insider we pinoy otakus need!

Scrumptious Anime Blog
http://scrumptious.animeblogger.net/category/anime/

“Is this site really pinoy-run?” is the question that pops up at every visit to this blog. On its banner is a lovely picture of Code Geass’ leading men that announces a very delicious welcome to visitors.

According to the site, “We (also) serve random anime-related news, articles, reviews, scans, humorous and off-beat photographs.” So if you’re done reading reviews on your newfound anime favorites, this site offers much more.

Scrumptious Anime Blog has what they call “Chibi stories” and according to the site “mixes random ingredients from different anime to come up with a unique blend of craziness and off-beat humor.”

The site owners regard themselves as chefs and have created a “Scrumptious Meter” that they use to grade each anime which they serve otakus.

Magnetic-Rose.net
http://magnetic-rose.net/

Oh, nothing very notable and special about this site, really. It just happens to be the Official Philippine Affiliate to Anime Festival Asia ’09! It also just happens to be a winner of the Philippine Blog Awards 2009 for the Culture and Arts Category and has also been shortlisted in the Reader’s Choice Award where it got fourth place!

Magnetic-Rose.net is, according to the site owner “an interactive news and general information site dedicated to all things J-pop for Philippine fans.” The site is owned by a woman named Rochelle who says the site sprouted out of loneliness and isolation as a college student in Tokyo.

This site is so unique in that the site owner definitely makes Filipinos as proud as we are for the site itself. See, Rochelle also works for MTV Asia Gadgets and Games Blog and is the only Filipino in the group of four bloggers.

Shouldn’t all of these recognitions be enough to make you want to check the site? Waitasec! You haven’t checked it yet?!

AniLinkz
http://www.anilinkz.com

Finally, a pinoy site to watch anime!

At first glance, no one would probably suspect that AniLinkz is managed by a Pinoy, but Ace Maranga, its administrator, actually hails from Cebu. Friends help him run the site by uploading links to a variety of anime titles throughout the net.

The site is a welcome change from other pinoy sites. It’s probably the only successful anime streaming site run by pinoys. It has a chat area, forum, a list of non-anime shows to watch and request for, as well as an arcade! Talk about entertainment!

To some there may not be anything special about the site compared to other anime streaming sites out there, but for us pinoys AniLinkz is definitely a site to be proud of.

*****

There as also some sites that may only be related to anime and manga but are just as interesting and makes the internet anime experience for pinoy otakus more special.

PAHK  U
http://www.pahku.com/index.aspx

It’s short for Pinoy Anime and Hobby Kolektors United (what were you thinking?) and is an online store for anime merchandise.

Cosplay.ph
http://www.cosplay.ph/news.php

Obviously, it’s a site dedicated to cosplays. Get the latest cosplay events and see how pinoys do cosplay in this site.

__________

Got your own site to feature, dear pinoy otaku? Tell us about it. The only way to make anime alive in this country to gather and stick together, tama ba?

Questor Hits 1 Year!!!

Questor Magazine’s August 2001 issue was not only special because it is the August issue (coz it’s my birthmonth and I’m the writer of this blog ^ ^), it also celebrated the magazine’s first year anniversary as the Philippine’s premier anime supplement.

The issue started with an editorial from EIC Bambi that has a rather funny beginning, announcing some changes on the magazine and the debut of an original manga.

Further inside the pages, Cecil Estrada wrote an article about swords and sorcery in anime. AXN’s Anime Fest 2001 was the highlight of the issue, showcasing pinoy cosplay.

EIC Bambi wrote an article about the event as well as a special interview with anime legend Mahiro Maeda. Wow! Then, somewhere in the issue, EIC Bambi wrote another article about cosplays. This time, about a pinoy cosplayer JM Chua who won a cosplay event held overseas.

Anime Continuum featured teasers of animes such as Clamp School Detectives, Ayashi no Ceres, Cooking Master Boy and Kodomo no Omocha. Lina Inverse was featured as Anime Dudette of the month.

And the slayers fever doesn’t end there. The soundtrack to the Slayers Motion Picture was reviewed and websites on sword and sorcery anime were featured (and which of course included Lina and the gang).

Accessing Memory Card talked about a popular sword and sorcery anime turned into game: Record of Lodoss War. On Deck on the other hand, had its farewell article about Magi-Nation CCG after a survey of popular Questor Magazine regular articles were done (and in which of couse On Deck didn’t get as much vote).

Finally, the issue unveiled the start of the magazine’s newest endeavour – an original manga written by Managing Editor Igor Cabbab and drawn by Jennyon Rosero and Aldin Viray. Gokitomo (My Friend the Cockroach) sure made otakus swoon (and be icked out by cockroaches who happened to be stars of the manga).

Anime 101 answered a question about the difference between anime and manga with Yu Yu Hakusho as an example. Who then knew that mangas were more gruesome and violent?

And lastly, the month’s Doujin Drawing Board recognized the talent of Vinson Ngo; while Watashi-Tachi had a very special take by combining it with the Fight! Article and putting inside the arena, who else but the Questor bullpen!

So Questor, the first anime magazine in the Philippines turned 1! But there sure were lots more in store for otakus from this one-of-a-kind pinoy magazine.
