Change Costume! Anime’s Best Dressed
You are what you wear. This ideology applies both in reality and in the world of animation. We all know that the Japanese have a bizarre fashion sense. And that said fashion sense transcends into their works, particularly anime and manga. So with a bunch of anime characters out there already, the question is who among them wears the most outstanding work of art and great sense of fashion?
We list down the 10 most well-dressed characters in anime.
10: Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
Be it in his Ashford Academy uniform or Zero costume, it’s easy to notice how Lelouch’s shape could easily look good in probably any clothes thrown his way. Add to that, an aristocratic flair matched with a caring personality and a mysterious side. Well, now that Euphemia and Shirley are out of the way, he’s all yours girls! Oh, I forgot, he’s also dead already.
09: Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)
The foxy lady doesn’t have to strip down to a bikini to tell you how sexy she is. But if she wants to we don’t hear anyone complaining. Usually seen with a cigarette in hand, Faye is the symbol of a sexy, wild, and independent woman. The babe’s on top! But they do say it’s lonely up there (which probably explains why she’s rarely in a relationship) But hey, at least she’s not dead, right?
08: Kurapika (Hunter X Hunter)
What the heck is he wearing? It’s so weird, we love it! The androgynous chain-wielding hunter is usually seen calm and collected even in the most intense situation. We can’t understand how he dresses, but it’s fine by us. We wouldn’t want to make him angry now, alright? Although, seeing him in casual clothing is a different thing. He’s actually very cute.
07: Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)
It’s the classic suit and black pants, so what’s new? Well, Spike’s given it a whole lot of edge. Maybe it’s his hair. Or his cool personality. Or his eyes. Can’t really put our finger on it. But damn, he looks hot in that simple, overused, seen-too-often getup.
06: Belldandy (Ah! My Goddess)
The presence of the goddess in her clothing brings us to our knees, begging her to grant our wishes. Her golden hair flowing together with her dress adds to her beauty. And with the kindness of, well, a goddess, whoever is her designer up there in heaven really made it for her. (We really can’t say anything negative here, lest we be hit by a lightning)
05: Usagi Tsukino (Sailormoon)
There’s one thing noticeable about Sailormoon’s Usagi Tsukino (and the other four inner senshi) if you are to watch Sailormoon: She wears different clothings. That alone makes every episode interesting. A bunch of other animes out there brings characters that you see wearing the same clothing from episode 1 onwards. So you could just imagine the hardwork given to a Sailormoon episode. Plus, they look good. And admit it, you’ve imagined your girl in their sailor fuku if you’re a guy, and you’ve imagined yourself in their sailor fuku if you’re a girl. Guilty pleasure!
04: Yuuko Ichihara (xxxHolic)
Is it her long arms and legs? Her long neck? Or her personality that gets us to watch her over and over and not get tired of it? Her seriousness is sexy. When we thought only Yumi Komagata (Rurouni Kenshin) and Sumire Kanzaki (Sakura Taisen) could look elegant and sexy in a kimono, Yuuko bursted in like a hungry Mokona. Make our wish come true and wear something sexier next time!
03: Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
The gloomy Evangelion 00 pilot is the sexiest 14 year-old out there (wait, that didn’t sound so correct). But seriously, Rei looks so innocent in her white EVA suit that compliments her hair color. Let’s not speak anymore, we might get ourselves into trouble with a minor.
02: Chii (Chobits)
Again, it’s the innocent look that drives us crazy. Chii is so lovely and cute in everything worn to her by her CLAMP fashion designers. Who wouldn’t want to own a persocom as cute a Chii? Ooooohhhhhh!!!! I wanna be Hideki and buy her a panty…^ ^
01: Vash Stampede (Trigun)
Forget the 60,000,000,000$$ bounty. We’d catch Vash anytime to get his odd-looking but uber-cool coat. And he’s got a big gun – oh wait! That’s his arm. Tip: To lure Vash, make sure to have boxes of doughnut.
On a serious note, Vash looks incredibly striking in that red trench coat of his. And it doesn’t matter if it’s in good condition or completely torn – we like seeing it on him. Oh, and those shades are to die for.
Peek Inside Sakura Kinomoto’s Clo(w)set
I wouldn’t really credit myself, but it is quite obvious that Sakura could very well be the most dressed anime character of all time. That is because I pay a lot of attention to the videos that I take of her. Of course, I wouldn’t allow a dull video with boring fashion for Sakura.
But how do I come up with a costume for Sakura you ask?
Well, first I consider Sakura’s cheerful personality. I always make it a point to put lively colors in Sakura’s costume. Well, also because I’m not into gloomy and dark costumes. I like them happy.
Second, I have to take into consideration that Sakura will not be going to a fashion show but rather to fight some supernatural beings. Therefore, the costume has to be light enough for Sakura to move in. The materials I use are usually very light and always comfortable.
My costumes are usually made up of a dress, shoes, gloves and a hat or head ornament. All of these when put together has to create one unified theme for Sakura. For example, I made her a cat costume when she fought the Thunder Card. All the elements of a cute cat costume were there, including a bell on her neck.
For Sakura’s final test costume, I made her a tight-fitting white costume so she could really move freely. It had a matching pink beret and pink cape with a long yellow ribbon keeping it in place.
It’s no secret how I love creating costumes for Sakura. But when Li Syaoran came into the scene, I knew I had to make at least one costume for him. Fortunately, I was able to see him in one of my creations as well.
