Clear the way for a band of blockheads; the roads adorned with joyful-colored confetti; the crowd cheers as the clown steers to put a smile on everyone here.
Questor Magazine once paved way for a merry mayhem of anime fools – those characters that keep the enjoyment rushing in and the otakus in front of the boob tube waiting for more laughs. They were as follows:
Hanamichi Sakuragi (Slam Dunk)
Kuwabara Kazuma (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Leorio (Hunter X Hunter)
Vash the Stampede (Trigun)
Max Domon (Flame of Recca)
Usagi Tsukino (Sailormoon)
Gourry Gabriev (Slayers)
Tatewaki Kuno (Ranma ½)
Master Satan (Dragon Ball)
Hokuto Sumeragi (Tokyo Babylon)
Ed (Cowboy Bebop)
Millie Thompson and Meryl Strife (Trigun)
As the fourth month of the year ushers in with the frivolous occasion that is April Fool’s Day, we take down anime’s one-of-a-kind bunch of misfits. It’s a sort of Part 2 to what Questor Magazine had listed down.
Meet anime’s new batch of fools. They’re crazy enough to steal some hearty laughs from you.
Haruhara Haruko (FLCL)
This woman is dangerous! She’s spontaneous, outrageous, and a very energetic girl investigator from outer-space. She says she’s not human and is unmistakeable in her hot pink hair and red coat.
Steer clear from her once she steps into her Vespa scooter, her bass guitar in tow. She can be a weapon of destruction as she swings her guitar onto unsuspecting victims as she hunts for Atomsk.
Haruko worked as the Nandaba maid, putting the older men of the house in steam with her intentional flirting with the young Nandaba member, Naota.
Haruko is funny when funny demands it, but reckless and unforgiving when her mission to get Atomsk needs it. You’ll never know what this crazy alien could and would do.
Ryoga Hibiki (Ranma ½)
Ryoga spends a lot of his time wandering. Not that it’s his choice since this rough-looking young man possesses the world’s worst sense of direction. He’s naïve and trusting and can be easily persuaded.
He is often depressed because of a number of reasons: loneliness, his Jusenkyo curse being that of a pig, always losing to Ranma, and his affection for Akane unrecognized. Yet he also has the unnerving determination to win over all of these – which makes for more comedic situations. Ryoga may have a bad sense of direction, but his comedic timing is at par. He is funny especially when he doesn’t mean to be.
Kodachi Kuno (Ranma ½)
A stubborn lover to Ranma and hater for his other fiancees, Kodachi, just like her dear brother Tatewaki and Principal father, lives up to the reputation of the Kuno family as twisted and outrageous.
She loves to cook and is actually good at it but is also crazy enough to lace them with poisons and toxins. She also has a deep love for drama (just like he brother) as exemplified by her appearances involving black rose petals.
Cheap tricks and foul moves are no match for this once-champion of Rythmic Gymnastics for she has her own unique styles and almost always gets away with it to get what she wants.
Shinobu Morita (Honey and Clover)
This energy ball of an art student has been spending 6 years in school already, stressing his teachers as well as fellow students. He likes doing what he wants and never seems to think of his future. He often catches people off guard and although he may not look it, he’s actually 24 years old – two years older than his (better) housemate Mayama – and is one of the most brilliant student in his art school.
His personality is like that of a firecracker. No, he’s not violent and dangerous. He just often explodes into his zany personality and no one can control him. In the beginning of the series, he often comes home bearing wads of money after disappearing for days. He may seem very close to his friends, but Morita’s personality is still very much a mystery to them.
Yukari Tanizaki (Azumanga Daioh)
Azumanga High Class 3’s homeroom and English teacher is a dangerous academic weapon. She strikes fear and too much laughter (which can also be fearful) onto her studentry, She can always use a book in her hand to strike unsuspecting students, even co-teachers.
She is a competitive spirit, going out of her way just to win and much to her students dismay, she drags them along to one struggle-filled road to victory, unless victory decides to shie away from them and their struggles turn out to be futile. She especially loves to compete in swimming and driving.
Stay away from Yukari-sensei if you can. Why? Just ask her unwilling students who have survived her for years.
Tamaki Suou (Ouran High School Host Club)
The president of the prestigious Ouran Host Club is known for his flamboyant and narcissistic nature. However, this young heir is also popular for being driven and motivated. An optimistic and friendly host loved by all the ladies in Ouran High.
His overly dramatic side would normally betray his true affection for a particular Host Club member. He keeps an obssesive father figure to Haruhi when in fact he gets outrageously jealous whenever someone tries to score on the lovely lady. But he’s too immature to show his feelings.
Mune Mune (Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi)
Oh Mune Mune. When are you going to stop looking for your lost love? This voluptuous vixen from Abenobashi shows up in every world, searching for a person that no one knows who. But who cares if she doesn’t find her man? In fact, seeing her in every dimension is always a treat. She’s st***d, persistent and downright sexy and every guy is completely fine with that. It’s best to just let her pop up in every dimension.
Mitsune Konno (Love Hina)
A flirt, troublemaker, and always seen with wine in her hand, Kitsune as she is most commonly known in Hinata Sou, just likes to make things interesting. She doesn’t seem to care what to say or do but she never gets into any fight with the girls of Hinata Sou. She can be greedy as shown by her interest in Keitaro after learning about his being a Toudai student (for he can be a strong candidate for graft) – which of course, was a lie (at least in the beginning).
Milfeulle Sakuraba (Galaxy Angel)
This pink-haired member of the Angel Troupe has extreme good luck and bad luck. Although a nice girl, she can be very clumsy and sometimes causes destructive mishaps.
A happy-go-lucky type, Milfeulle loves to cook for her friends. The flower adorned in her head is not just there for aesthetic purpose. She can actually use it to hover like a helicopter.
Usopp (One Piece)
As his name (“Uso” = lie, “Isoppu” = The Boy Who Cried Wolf story) and looks (like Pinocchio’s) show it, Usopp is a chronic liar. He makes up for the comic relief in most situation. He and Luffy share the same path and goofiness and often shows cowardice and sentimentality.
With these band of screwballs, anime keeps on successfully dishing out its foremost purpose: to entertain by bringing a smile to each audience’ face. And this day marks a very special day for all of them…
(No…not this kind of crazy)
